Poor Quality Book All Around, January 16, 2010

I was extremely disappointed with this book. It is almost 400 pages and most of it is what I can best describe as "annoying fluff" that provides vague suggestions that provide no real value to the reader. Here is an example of a paragraph in the book:

P.210 "The success of your marketing is also going to depend, in part, on how well you deal with people who follow up on your ads. There is no point in creating and paying for good advertisements only to fall short in the follow up process. You can present whatever information you want about your business, but if you do not have good follow-up, your marketing efforts will be wasted."

The author constantly repeats themselves throughout the book across chapters and in the above case, within the same paragraph. The above paragraph could have been widdled down to 1 sentence or bullet point. It feels as though the author is babbling to make the book as long as possible (like I used to do in college to reach the minimum page requirement for my essays). The book was written by two different people and it feels very in-cohesive, as if they just divided up topics and started writing with poor organization. I doubt the author(s) has any special skill or training in teaching.

The book wanders off for chapters talking about general business topics that are not specific to web design businesses. For example, there are pages and pages about how to conduct yourself in an interview. The author is suggesting you are interviewing with your clients when it is actually more similar to a sales presentation. There is a paragraph just about the perfect handshake and the author stresses that it could be the key to whether you get your client or not. Pretty ridiculous to me.

Overall, the book provides some relevant information but not a lot of specific calls to action about web design-specific topics. Neither of the authors even have a web site of their own to show for. I don't think they are qualified to write a how-to book on web design. I have a little background in business and web design and this book was 90% useless. For some reason I decided I had to read some sort of how-to book to make myself feel prepared before I went on my own. This book was very painful to read and made me feel stupid for wasting my time on it. People who are really directionless and lost might find this book more useful, but it is probably a waste of money for people who are already savvy and don't need to be babied about the obvious. This book is ridiculously overpriced and wasn't even edited (several grammatical errors) and the printing and binding is even lopsided! This is an amateur book in all respects.

Simply - I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The content is well organized in a progression of information that makes sense when starting any business. There are relative and applicable links or references at the end of each chapter as well as questions to ask yourself before moving onto the next step in your business.

This book will help me greatly in my own endeavors to start a web design business. I recommend it highly!

The title of this book is How to Open & Operate a Financially Successful Web Site Design Business, but it contains so much more that can apply to any entrepreneur starting a new business. The first thing you want to know is this book will not teach you how to design websites, the book assumes that you are already good at that. This book tells you how to turn that skill into a viable business.

My favorite part of the book is the add-on services section. It makes perfect sense, you already have the skill and know-how to create great web sites, you have a list of businesses that trust (and more importantly pay) you for that service, so why not expand your business with complementary services like search engine optimization and pay-per-click marketing programs. You can tell that the authors of this book have already gone through the difficulties of starting and operating a web site design business. They have already had success and the failures in the business and they give the reader a roadmap to the success while avoiding the failures. It is like getting the answer to the test! This is one of those books that you will find yourself pulling off your shelf from time to time as you grow your business.

I just finished reading Web Development Solutions by Christian Heilmann and Mark Norman Francis. It would be a great book for anyone who is just starting out in web development, and wants to make the jump from the world of WYSIWYG web tools, to the world of hand-coding and really understanding the underlying principles of best practices. It covers a broad range of topics, from WordPress blogs to Microformats, Ajax and APIs.

It would also be an ideal book for anyone using WordPress, who wants to really push it to the limits. The first several chapters cover some of the basics, as far as installing blog software both locally and remotely. There are examples of those who are "living the dream" blogging full-time, with financial support.

The latter chunk of chapters covers more granular details of web-dev, such as XHTML, CSS and JavaScript. Various JS libraries are described, including: jQuery, Mootools and YUI. Fundamentals of Ajax and REST are discussed, as well as how to incorporate off-site web services to spruce up your metadata. Doctypes are explained, and how this affects various browsers such as IE6 rendering standards compliance mode, rather than quirks.

Some of the basics around SEO are also covered, so that your website or blog is as visible as possible to automated search engine crawlers. Implicitly, anything good for bots is also good for accessibility, and gracefully degradable enhancements are illustrated. Such examples including using Google Maps.

Overall, this is a great introductory book for anyone looking to enhance their knowledge beyond that of hobbyist blogger to more of a true web developer. It covers the full spectrum of considerations, from self-promotional Digg links on blog posts, to some of the more in-depth DOM Scripting techniques out there. Fundamentals are far too often overlooked, but they are tackled well here.

Web Development Solutions: Ajax, APIs, Libraries, and Hosted Services Made Easy by Christian Heilmann and Mark Norman Francis left me with mixed feelings. The title lead me to believe there would be some more in-depth information related to the topics, but in reality the end of the title should have been Using Wordpress. The majority of this book focuses on Wordpress and how each of the topics relate to the blogging platform.

The reason I had mixed emotions is because on one hand, the authors made it seem as though web development is so easy your Grandma could do it, while on the other hand sliding in some disclaimers about needing more knowledge on different topics. I think that this book would give someone just enough material to be dangerous, but not enough to really understand web development as a whole. This book is geared to the beginner in web development, so I was hoping for some more solid material.

With that out of the way, lets take a closer look at the book and its contents:

The first chapter simply discusses the reason for starting up a website in the first place. There are many different reasons for many different people as to why they start a site. Some start for financial reasons (make money and advertising), while others start to share photos with family and friends. This chapter discussed several of these reasons for starting a website.

Chapter two was where the book really started to take off. This chapter discusses the Dilemma of "Rolling your Own" Solutions. We also get a brief crash course in several aspects related to web development.

The author gets you started by installing a local server on your machine with PHP and MySQL. After this is completed, the authors walk through an installation of Wordpress as we begin our journey. Basically every chapter after this will use Wordpress in one way or another.

This is where things get somewhat fuzzy. The chapters related to Ajax, APIs, and Libraries all revolve around Wordpress. The topics are not discussed in depth, but merely show you how to install an array of different plugins available to the Wordpress platform. Flickr, Youtube, Odeo, and Google Maps--all of which are presented as plugins for Wordpress.

The last few chapters involved some good discussions on promoting your content, navigation and layout, and finally--how to get help when you hit a roadblock. The last chapter really made this book worth the read, as it discussed the different ways to get help, the places to go, and how to ask for help in the different communities. There are some very helpful and important tips in this chapter as you seek help from your peers and colleagues.

Overall, the book was not a bad read--it just left me with mixed emotions due to the title of the book. The authors are very knowledgeable and that shows in each of the chapters. Though I felt the book made things look so easy, the authors were sure to point out that the solutions there were not in-depth, but enough to get you started. If you are just beginning your trek into web development, then this book would be a good read to get you up and running in no time flat. However--for long term involvement in the web, or a more in-depth discussion of the topics listed in the title, you may want to grab a few more books.

OK, I hate to gush but... wait, it occurs to me that may not be the best choice of words to begin a review on a "Make Your Own Sex Toys" book. Let me rephrase that... I'm not one who likes to fawn over an author's work like some out of control fanboy at a Justin Bieber concert. In this case, I'm gonna make an exception. The author of this book, Matt Pagett, is to homemade sex toys as Bob Villa is to bathroom renovation.

I'm a bona fide do-it-yourselfer. When my truck's broke do I call a mechanic? Heck no... I fix it. When my wife devotes two hours and a bottle of Miralax to clogging up the plumbing in our toilet (sorry honey if you are reading this) I don't call no stinkin' plumber... I unclog it. So when it comes time to stock up my home dungeon for the Mrs, you think I'm gonna go buy some high dollar plastic ding-a-ling? Or invest in a rubber replica of Pam Anderson's nether regions for myself to have relations with? Heck no... I'm putting on the welding gear and making my own devices.

This book stops short of providing schematic drawings for your more exotic 'dungeon quality' devices but is rife with tips on even using common household items to enhance your pleasure when you make sexy-time.

This book is quite literally, a do-it-yourselfer's wet dream.

This book has been a go-to this winter for fun, easy to accomplish craft projects for my daughter Mindy's Brownie Scout Troop. There are 50 individual projects listed so each girl can make at least two items which will certainly come in handy for Mother and Father's Day presents later this spring. As soon as I took the book out of the paper bag, the girls started to circle round, wide eyed in wonder at all the fun and stimulating projects before them. In fact, they started to scream and cover their eyes! Little girls of that age can be so excitable, can't they? This book has also been a big hit at my son's Cub Scout meetings as well. There is enough to interest boys as well as girls. I highly recommend this craft book!

First, very few of he items can be considered sex TOYS.
DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY!!!

Here are example of what they tell you:

* Use a basic crochet knot and make a Member Warmer
(doesn't even tell you how to link to the next row)...

* Cut a hole in a bar of soap and have squeaky clean fun...

* Buy a flexible stick and duct tape shoe laces or leather strips to make a flogger...

* Put gold leaf on her breast to look sexy...

* Sew a short strip of elastic to make a ball stretcher...

* Run a cord through some wood beads to make love beads...

* Put a condom in an old sock, fill with lube, have fun...

* Make a hole in a ripe melon, heat in microwave for 30 seconds, Have fun...

This is, without a doubt, the biggest waste of money I've ever seen!

This book is mainly code applied to several web services case studies. There is an introductory segment at the beginning which has some nice illustrations. After that the book uses a combination of Java code and screenshots to demonstrate eight example uses of web services. The most handy one, in my opinion, is the News Aggegator, which uses web services to retrieve information from sites like Amazon. Then it turns that information into RSS so that you can retrieve it with your news reader.

There is a lot more code than text in this book. If you learn well by looking at code then this book should work for you. This book is a little looser than the O'Reilly standard. There are more screenshots than usual, the UML graphics are not as well done as usual, and the code is not as well annotated. That being said, it's a fun and informative read that finally injects a little reality into the web services hype.
